Poetry has a long history, dating back to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. Early poems evolved from folk songs such as the Chinese Shijing, or from a need to retell oral epics, as with the Sanskrit Vedas, Zoroastrian Gathas, and the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Ancient attempts to define poetry, such as Aristotle's Poetics, focused on the uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song and comedy. Later attempts concentrated on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme, and emphasized the aesthetics which distinguish poetry from more objectively informative, prosaic
forms of writing. From the mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been
more generally regarded as a fundamental creative act employing
language.
For Example:
Forever Isn't That Long
© By long lost
life is something you cant trust
whether it be with you heart, love, or lust
but loves a fire you cant put out
its doesnt grow cold it doesnt give out
when someone says they will love you forever
Forever isnt that long
the love gives out or someone grows bored
or someone goes caotic from something they heard
the end result is never even good
cause, forever isnt that long
it might seem like you love them for them
but you dont really know who they are
you find real soon and you dont like it anymore
guess what??
forever isnt that long

Your eyes are the stars that shine so bright,
Your arms are the blanket that wraps me tight.
Your body's my shield that protects me from harm,
Your touch is my teddy bear, soft and warm.
Your hand is the tissue that dries my tears,
Your strength is my sword that fights my fears.
Your smile's my sun that brightens my days,
Your kiss is the wind that takes my breath away.
Your hair is the sky as black as night,
Your laughter's a child so full of life.
Your voice is the lullaby that sings me to sleep,
Your lips are a candy so juicy and sweet.
Your'e the answer to my prayers from up above,
The one who will always have my love.
I love you
A Million Times
© By Ronnie Catron
A million times I have told you I love you
A million times I will tell you again.
I take you in my arms and hold you tight
Because I know this is right
I love you more than there are stars in the sky
I love you so much I hate to say goodbye
You are the one, the one for me
I will always be there like I said I would be
There are bridges that we have to conquer
I know you worry, but we will not falter
Please be mine now and forever
I will be yours for ever and ever
I wrote this poem just for you
Because I know our love is true.
I have told you a million times again
I will love you till the end.
A Tree Is Perfect Love

Love is patient. A tree stands waiting its entire life without complaint.
Love is kind. A tree doesn't charge rent to its many animals and insects who call it home.
Love isn't jealous. A tree won't change its natural growth to look like other trees.
Love doesn't brag. A tree shows its beautiful colors in Fall, without speaking a word about them.
Love isn't rude. A tree never rejects anyone.
Love isn't selfish. A tree gives away its fruit free of charge.
Love doesn't get mad. A tree never yells at a woodcutter for using its branches for firewood.
Love doesn't keep a list of wrongs. A tree won't keep track of every time a woodpecker destroys its bark.
Love is happy with truth. A tree accepts all things for what they are.
Love always protects. A tree offers its shade from the sun to all who need it.
Love always trusts. A tree never worries if the sun will rise or not.
Love always hopes. A tree never gives up, enduring the worst weather without fear.
Love always keeps going. A tree keeps growing, everyday reaching closer to the stars.
Love never fails. A tree gives us oxygen, our breath of life, even in death, it gives us shelter and warmth.
Love is perfect. A tree is perfect.

Black Storm
by CrimsonRain
I know, it hurts
the storm has come and gone
leaving you and I
broken in ruins but this cant be where i die
I needed someone that protected me from my self
and you never could
and so i move on from this place
with a heavy heart all alone
The memories held me down for so long
because i couldn't just let go of you
and it still hurts
but i know now what i must do to survive this place
There is nothing left
and i desperately rebuild my life
from the broken pieces
you left of my heart on the floor
Time is no friend as he burns the wound shut
and the tears they flow like blood from a cut
But i need to be strong with one foot after another
i just have to move on
Because you’ve left me to rot all alone.
I walk with the shine of sun
by Kissezonthemoon
'You say you do. but yet your not really sure, thats why your constantly changing the rule, you sleep with one eye open the other tired from the strain, you get lost in the questions you ask yourself daily, like a fist beaten against the brain,
If, when, why, what?
But still you say you have the best
I know you got, what you got
I say dont knock on my heart
because yours still beats in my chest
at night when i dream i taste the salt on my lips
tears I cry for every word youve said
There used to be guilt for my sins
until I pulled down the confinement of everything you did
i almost hated you
but then i out witted you once again, because that would mean youd win
You almost had me forgetten who i was, Afraid of feeling alive,
Yeah i was low stagering down and out
feeling kinda worthless
walking around like a blind minion
I dont know what your logic was
but I know what made me see
through the crimson blur you created from me
a girl who dreamed and believed
from your withered flower a rose has bud
I walk with the shine of sun
Once again Im able to enjoy the feeling of fun
no longer is it a short lived emotion with no where to go
so i say to you fare well indeed
may the bed of brittle glass and liquid amber
embrace your forever sorry ass
Scarlet Letter to No One
by Aspire2
There's a hush in the bedroom. The bed lies in ruins.
Sheets litter that once nice floor.
Whispers touch the walls like love from a ghost.
There's only one thing missing.
At night the lights go dim. People tend to shiver.
Some of them cry.
In the morning, people wake. Some feel.
Others, others just wish they could.
When they stand up their covers hit the ground.
Most times, you see who they are.
They stand bare, letting their eyes adjust.
Morning makes the most of them.
There are times when their eyes never close.
Maybe they're afraid of the dark,
I'm more afraid of morning.
Every day starts with a wish. Some end in dreams.
I've been watching as the world turns.
Maybe if it turned faster
I could turn away from you.
I know I've written you this poem before.
Clothes stack themselves to Heaven,
But lately they've missed the point.
They're climbing into space
And all the spaces nothing occupies.
If this whole poem were a metaphor, who'd know?
It's not, but the thought counts just as much.
There's something nice in honesty.
Honestly, I miss you. That'd sound better in a song.
I wonder if anyone else stays up at night
Just waiting to hear the door.
Hoping someone that they once held close
Would come wading through the clothes?
We all have dirty laundry and skeletons in the closet.
When I feel brave, I lay mine down as words,
Writing my scarlet letter to no one
In hopes that someone reads.
If you're reading this then I hope you know I'm sorry.
My room is still a mess, so am I.
Don't worry, dear, this all adds up the same.
It's just another poem on another night
When I'm wishing I could dream.
I Can't Stop Crying Today
by Brandon
I can't stop crying today
My world walked out the door
With her she took my heart
For I will love no more
The hours passed like seconds
When our two hearts were one
The seconds passed like hours
After she said that she was done
She was going to love me forever
At least that is what she said
Her heart belonged to someone else
That is what her letter read
I no longer live in color
My world is black and white
I always wonder what she is doing
As I lie awake at night
I hope tomorrow is better
This is what I pray
But right now my heart is broken
I can't stop crying today
